Hipkins seeking youthful replacement
MP Chris Hipkins is seeking a youthful replacement MP, albeit for a temporary tenure.
The Rimutaka MP will be selecting his 2015/2016 Youth MP in the coming weeks.
Youth Parliament is a once every three year opportunity that allows young people to represent their peers and experience what it’s like to be an MP.
“Youth Parliament is a fantastic opportunity for young people to engage and represent their local communities. More than that, the Rimutaka Youth MP assists my efforts to engage young people in politics within the electorate” Chris Hipkins says.
Former Youth MPs describe the experience as an extremely worthwhile one. It prompts many young people to consider a career in public service.
“I felt very lucky to be selected, made new friends; and learnt about the processes of Government. If youth want to facilitate change they have to get involved. They can start by getting enrolled to vote” Rosie Bowman says.
Ms Bowman will be involved in helping to select the Rimutaka’s next Youth MP, along with Mr Hipkins and Hutt News and Upper Hutt Leader editor Simon Edwards.
Aspiring candidates are asked to complete an online questionnaire. The top 5 applicants will then be invited to Parliament to present a speech to the selection panel.
Mr Hipkins will be visiting local high schools to promote Youth Parliament and hope to receive a broad range of applications for the role of Rimutaka Youth MP.
